**Los Angeles, CA** – The new Netflix romantic drama, ‘My Oxford Year,’ starring Sofia Carson and Corey Mylchreest, is drawing strong reactions from viewers, particularly for its emotionally charged ending. Based on the 2018 novel by Julia Whelan, the film initially presents a blossoming romance between Anna De La Vega (Carson), an American poetry student at Oxford, and her professor, Jamie Davenport (Mylchreest).

The film follows Anna’s master’s program in Oxford and growing affection with her teacher. However, their idyllic romance is shattered when Anna discovers Jamie is battling a rare and incurable form of cancer, the same disease that claimed his brother’s life. Jamie, having witnessed his brother’s long and arduous treatment, chooses to live his remaining days to the fullest rather than pursuing aggressive, ultimately futile, treatments.

Despite Jamie’s desire for Anna to move on, she abandons her promising career in New York City to stay by his side, creating cherished memories. While they dream of a grand European tour, Jamie’s condition worsens, and he succumbs to pneumonia, passing away with Anna at his side.

In a departure from the book’s ending, which saw Jamie successfully undergo a medical trial, the film sees Anna honoring his legacy by embarking on the planned European tour alone and returning to Oxford to teach poetry, mirroring Jamie’s own first class.

Both Carson, who also served as a producer, and Mylchreest have defended the film’s ending, stating that it reinforces the film’s themes of living life to the fullest. “Even though it’s clear Anna’s alone at the end, we left it a little bit ambiguous because we wanted the film to end with hope and with light,” Carson told People Magazine in June 2025. Mylchreest added that Jamie’s decision to die on his own terms gives viewers a greater understanding of the character’s philosophy on life.

‘My Oxford Year,’ also starring Dougray Scott and Catherine McCormack, is currently streaming on Netflix. Viewer discretion is advised due to the film’s themes of illness and loss.
