**New York, NY** – A New York City community is reeling after the tragic death of NYPD Officer Didarul Islam, 36, who was one of four people killed in a mass shooting at the NFL headquarters on Park Avenue Monday evening. Shooter Shane Tamura, 27, opened fire with an AR-15, firing 47 rounds before taking his own life. He had no known affiliation with the NFL, but reportedly blamed the organization for covering up chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).

Officer Islam was working a side job providing security at the building when the shooting occurred. He is survived by his wife, Jamila Akhter, who is eight months pregnant, and two young sons, Ahyan, 7, and Azhaan, 5.

Those who knew Officer Islam are remembering him as a dedicated father. According to Tajwattie Singh, a teacher who taught both of Islam’s sons at their Bronx preschool, the boys idolized their father. She recalled how Ahyan would proudly wear an NYPD uniform to school, exclaiming, “‘I wear my police uniform just like my dad!'” Singh said Ahyan “looked just like a police officer and he behaved like one with his blue uniform and hat… He was walking firmly like a police officer.”

Singh also remembered a Father’s Day when Officer Islam brought his youngest son, Azhaan, to the classroom. “When they came in, he had the dad’s hand and he said to the class, ‘My dad is a police officer,’” beaming with pride.

“The kids were so proud of him,” Singh recalled. “They would always talk about their dad.”

Chloe Pashman, education director at the preschool, described the tight-knit community’s devastation. “It’s a very close-knit community,” she said. “We call ourselves a family. It was very devastating, very shocking.” She also noted the strong relationship between the school and the local NYPD, adding that this tragedy “affects the whole community, including the school community.”

Singh expressed deep sorrow for Islam’s widow, Jamila Akhter. “She’s going to be lost,” Singh said. “The baby won’t even know his dad.”
