CHARLOTTE, NC – The Carolina Panthers enter their second season under head coach Dave Canales with hopes of continuing the upward trajectory begun in 2024. While a 5-12 record may not scream success, it marked a significant improvement from the dismal 2-15 showing in 2023. However, despite these steps forward, national media outlets remain skeptical about the Panthers’ chances.
In ESPN’s recent coaching staff rankings, Ben Solak placed the Panthers’ coaching staff at a lowly 24th in the league. While acknowledging Canales’ positive impact in his first year, Solak emphasized the considerable challenges the team still faces.
Solak highlighted the Panthers’ improved running game as a key factor in supporting quarterback Bryce Young’s development. The bolstered offensive line, coupled with the coaching staff’s commitment to a ground-and-pound approach, provided Young with easier reads and boosted his confidence.
“The best thing they did on offense wasn’t so much improving Young’s play as it was improving the running game around Young,” wrote Solak. “When you pound the rock, you create easier reads for a young quarterback, and all of a sudden, those one-on-one downfield opportunities fill the kid with confidence.”
Questions remain about the consistency of the running game and the extent to which the Panthers can place more responsibility on Young’s shoulders. Overcoming that, and solidifying those elements are going to be essential to ensure continued growth on the offensive front.
Several headlines indicate fan and analyst attention, including the impact rookie wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan could have, how quarterback Bryce Young will address a critical weakness and the salary cap space the team has headed into the preseason.
The Panthers have a lot to prove in order to win the support of national media and the fan base.
