**Boston Poised to Become Home to WNBA Team as Celtics Governor Strikes Deal for Connecticut Sun**

**Boston, MA** – Boston could soon have a permanent WNBA team, as a Boston-based group led by Celtics minority governor Steve Pagliuca has reached an agreement with the Mohegan Tribe to relocate the Connecticut Sun to TD Garden, according to sources familiar with the transaction.

Pagliuca is set to purchase the team for a record $325 million and invest an additional $100 million in a new practice facility in Boston for the Sun. Sources indicate the Mohegan Tribe was looking to sell the club, and the record offer accelerated the process. This sale price would represent the highest ever paid for a professional women’s sports franchise.

The Mohegan Tribe, who have owned the Sun since their relocation from Orlando in 2003, has reportedly been considering a move. Two sellout games at TD Garden in the past two years encouraged ownership to explore a Boston group. Sun players have praised the atmosphere, TD Garden amenities, and the city during their visits.

The sale must be approved by the WNBA and its governors. However, according to one source, the WNBA would prefer to save Boston as a potential expansion city in 2033. The league has announced expansion teams in Portland, Toronto, Cleveland, Detroit, and Philadelphia over the next five years.

Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey, a long-time advocate for a WNBA team in Boston, expressed her support for the potential move. “I’ve been pushing for years for Boston to get a WNBA team; I think it would be great for Boston, and that would be great for the WNBA,” she said. “We are the hub of New England and the place that basketball was invented. I think it makes a lot of sense.”

The Connecticut Sun have struggled this season with a 5-21 record, after undergoing a significant rebuild in the offseason. The team assured season ticket holders that the club would play at Mohegan Sun Arena in 2026. The Boston group is targeting a 2027 move and might play early-season games in Providence to avoid scheduling conflicts at TD Garden.

An NBA source indicated that the Celtics organization has no objection to the Sun moving in, with several Celtics players expressing their support for a team in Boston.

The WNBA has yet to comment on the potential sale. If the WNBA insists on keeping the team in Connecticut, the Mohegan Tribe will cooperate, but their preference is to sell to the Boston group. They believe selling the franchise would be the most financially lucrative move, allowing them to focus on their casino and hotel operations.

As the WNBA experiences a surge in popularity, fueled by the arrival of players like Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, and Paige Bueckers, the potential addition of a Boston team adds to the excitement and momentum of the league.
