Sat Aug 02 12:10:00 UTC 2025: **Charley Hull Battles Back from Illness Ahead of AIG Women’s British Open**
Royal Porthcawl, Wales – Charley Hull is set to compete in the AIG Women’s British Open this week, marking her return to major championship golf after a dramatic exit from the Amundi Evian Championship earlier this month. Hull was forced to withdraw from the Evian after collapsing on the course due to a severe virus, leading to her being taken off on a stretcher.
Speaking to the press on the eve of the tournament, Hull revealed the illness has taken a toll, causing her to lose four kilograms and 8 mph of swing speed. “I’m not hitting it the best coming into this week,” Hull admitted, “which is very frustrating because it’s an event I’ve been looking forward to playing all year. I’ve just got to go out there with what I’ve got.”
Hull described the ordeal, explaining, “Every time I stood up, I fainted… They took my blood pressure. It was 80/50 which is quite low. My blood sugar was 0.4. I think I just had a really bad virus.” She returned to action last week at the ISPS Handa Women’s Scottish Open but admits she’s still not at full strength, further hampered by a recent back tweak.
Despite the challenges, Hull is familiar with Royal Porthcawl, having played there in 2011 during the Junior Vagliano Trophy alongside friend and fellow major champion, Georgia Hall. She even shared a humorous anecdote from that event.
Currently ranked No. 20 in the world, Hull is looking to regain her form after a strong run of performances earlier this season. She also expressed admiration for fellow English golfer Lottie Woad, who is making waves on the professional circuit. “I think what Lottie Woad has done is absolutely unbelievable,” Hull said. “She’s a breath of fresh air for the game.”
Despite her health struggles, Hull remains determined to compete and enjoy the championship. “At the end of the day, I just get me making a few birdies to start with and I think I’ll get my confidence back straightaway.”
