**Male, Maldives – July 30, 2025** – Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent state visit to the Maldives marks a significant step towards resetting relations between India and the island nation, following a period of tension. The visit comes after Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu’s election in November 2023 on an “India Out” platform, which included a demand for the removal of Indian troops.
Despite initial friction, including the replacement of Indian military personnel with a civilian team, relations have shown signs of improvement. President Muizzu visited New Delhi in October 2024, and Modi’s recent visit made him the first head of state to visit the Maldives since Muizzu assumed office. Modi was also the Guest of Honour at the country’s 60th Independence Day celebrations on July 26th.
Historically, India and the Maldives have shared strong ties, with India being among the first nations to establish diplomatic relations post-independence in 1965. This bond was underscored by President Muizzu, who acknowledged the shared history of trade and neighborly relations.
During the visit, both countries announced discussions on a Free Trade Agreement. India extended a ₹4,850 crore line of credit to the Maldives and reduced its annual debt repayment obligation by 40%. An India-Maldives Parliamentary Friendship Group has also been established.
The thawing of relations comes after a period where President Muizzu sought closer ties with China, raising concerns in India. The situation escalated when derogatory remarks were made by Maldivian ministers regarding Modi’s visit to Lakshadweep, sparking a “Boycott Maldives” campaign on Indian social media.
Despite these tensions, India continued providing aid and financial support to the Maldives, including rolling over a $50 million Treasury Bill. The recent high-level visit signifies a renewed commitment to bilateral cooperation in areas such as infrastructure, technology, climate change, and energy.
The Maldives gained full independence from Britain on July 26, 1965, and established diplomatic relations with India soon after. The two nations have since engaged in peaceful cooperation, including joint defense exercises and membership in regional organizations like SAARC. India has also provided critical assistance during times of crisis, such as the 1988 coup attempt.
