Fri Aug 01 11:51:30 UTC 2025: **Slovenia Imposes Full Arms Embargo on Israel, Citing Gaza Conflict**
**LJUBLJANA, Slovenia** – Slovenia has become the first European Union member to ban all weapons trade with Israel, citing the ongoing war in Gaza and the EU’s inaction on the matter. The decision, announced Thursday by Prime Minister Robert Golob, prohibits the import, export, and transit of weapons to and from Israel.
“Slovenia is the first European country to ban the import, export and transit of weapons to and from Israel,” the government said in a statement, explaining that it was acting “independently” because the EU was “unable to adopt concrete measures … due to internal disagreements and disunity.” The government stated that it was the “duty of every responsible state to take action” amid the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza.
The move comes two weeks after Slovenia barred two far-right Israeli ministers from entering the country, declaring them “persona non grata” for allegedly inciting violence and human rights violations against Palestinians.
In June, Slovenia’s parliament officially recognized Palestinian statehood, joining Ireland, Norway, and Spain in similar moves prompted by condemnation of Israel’s actions in Gaza. Last week, France, the United Kingdom, and Canada also hinted at potential recognition of a Palestinian state.
Israel has condemned these recognitions as rewards for Hamas, but human rights groups and UN experts have criticized Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, comparing it to genocide. Over 60,000 Palestinians have reportedly been killed in the conflict, with many more at risk of starvation due to the blockade. Several countries, including South Africa, have filed cases against Israel at the International Court of Justice, alleging genocide.
Slovenia’s arms embargo marks a significant escalation in European criticism of Israel’s actions in Gaza, with the country arguing the need to take a leading role in ensuring more active approach to handling this conflict.
