Fri Aug 01 12:34:35 UTC 2025: **Headline: Madhya Pradesh Assembly Disrupts as Minister Shah Faces Resignation Calls Over Army Officer Remarks**

**Bhopal, August 1, 2025 (The Hindu)** – The Madhya Pradesh legislative assembly was thrown into disarray today as opposition Congress members demanded the resignation of BJP cabinet minister Vijay Shah over controversial remarks he allegedly made about Army officer Colonel Sofia Qureshi. Shah, who holds the portfolios of Bhopal gas tragedy relief and rehabilitation, public assets management, and tribal affairs, faced a barrage of protests as he attempted to answer a question regarding the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy during Question Hour.

The Congress party accused Shah of disrespecting Col. Qureshi, prompting a brief adjournment of the house amidst shouting and sloganeering from both sides. Opposition members trooped into the well of the house chanting slogans calling for Shah’s resignation and removal from office.

The uproar follows mounting pressure on Minister Shah after the Supreme Court on Monday, July 28, 2025, criticized him for failing to issue a genuine public apology to Col. Qureshi. The court expressed doubts about Shah’s sincerity, citing his conduct.

The controversy stems from a video that circulated widely allegedly showing Shah making objectionable remarks against Col. Qureshi. Col. Qureshi and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh, had gained national recognition as spokespersons during “Operation Sindoor,” India’s military response to the Pahalgam terror attack in May.

The Madhya Pradesh High Court had previously rebuked Shah for his remarks, ordering police to file a First Information Report (FIR) against him for promoting enmity and hatred. While Shah expressed regret, stating that he respected Col. Qureshi “more than his sister,” the Supreme Court deemed his initial apology inadequate and ordered the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the matter further. The SIT is due to submit its report by August 13.

The incident has sparked a major political row in Madhya Pradesh, with the opposition determined to hold Shah accountable for his comments. The BJP government, however, has defended its minister, accusing the opposition of disrespecting the Army.
