**Indian National Jailed in Singapore for Job Scam Targeting Domestic Worker**
**Singapore -** Charanjeet Singh, a 20-year-old Indian national, has been sentenced to 13 weeks in jail by a Singapore court for cheating and using forged documents to defraud a domestic worker. The Straits Times reported that Singh scammed the 29-year-old victim, also from India, out of over SGD 2,000 (approximately Rs 1,25,000) with promises of securing jobs for her relatives in Singapore.
Singh, who met the victim in October 2024, demanded Rs 2,50,000 (approximately SGD 3,700) per applicant, falsely claiming he could arrange work permits. Between November and December of last year, the victim transferred SGD 2,135 to Singh. In return, Singh provided forged Ministry of Manpower (MOM) documents, including manipulated in-principle approval letters for work permits. These forgeries were created using an original document Singh had accessed without permission from a former co-tenant.
The scam unraveled when the victim’s employer attempted to verify the authenticity of the documents on the MOM website and discovered no such applications existed. After receiving the money, Singh became untraceable, leading the victim to file a police report in December. Singh was arrested in April.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Maximilian Chew stated that Singh had assured the victim she would receive a password to access the information on the MOM’s website after full payment was made.
Singh, unrepresented in court, expressed regret for his actions and accepted the punishment. Three other charges were taken into consideration during the sentencing.
