**Historic British Cemetery in Andhra Pradesh Under Threat of Encroachment**

**VIJAYAWADA, India – August 1, 2025** – The Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] is urging Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu to intervene and protect a historically significant British cemetery in Narsipatnam, Anakapalli district, from encroachers. CPI(M) State Secretary V. Srinivasa Rao has penned a letter to the Chief Minister highlighting the illegal construction of permanent structures on the 46-cent site, located in survey No. 9 under Narsipatnam Municipality.

Rao stated that more than half of the burial ground is already encroached and further construction is continuing. He emphasized the site’s historical significance, noting that it serves as a reminder of the Manyam rebellion led by Alluri Sitarama Raju. The cemetery was established following the deaths of British policemen during the rebellion, a legacy which the government has not protected.

Rao criticised municipal and revenue officials for their inaction and urged the Chief Minister to take immediate action against the encroachers, demolish the illegal structures, and develop the site into a heritage park, transforming it into a public memorial reflecting the spirit of resistance. The CPI(M) views the cemetery as being symbolically linked to the freedom struggle.
