**New York, NY -** A lone gunman, identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura, opened fire in a midtown Manhattan office building Monday evening, leaving four dead and one critically injured. The shooting occurred at the 44-story building on Park Avenue, which houses prominent financial firms including Blackstone, as well as the National Football League.
According to the New York Police Department, Tamura entered the building armed with a Palmetto State Armory AR-15 assault rifle and wearing a bullet-resistant vest. He shot five people in total, including a New York Police Department officer, Islam, who was among the deceased. The other victims were two men and a woman, all civilians.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated that Tamura shot the NY Police Department Officer followed by a woman who took cover behind a pillar before proceeding through the lobby. He then shots a security guard, who was taking cover behind the security desk. One additional male was shot in the lobby. He then went to the 33rd floor before taking his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Tamura, a native of Hawaii who later moved to Las Vegas, possessed a valid concealed firearms permit issued in June 2022, and an expired private investigator license. He also previously worked as a security guard at a Las Vegas casino and played football for Granada Hills. Investigators have found no prior criminal record for Tamura. A vehicle registered to Tamura with Nevada plates was found at the scene.
The incident prompted a massive emergency response, with police cordoning off the area and urging the public to avoid East 52nd Street between Park and Lexington Avenues. “At this time, the scene has been contained and the lone shooter has been neutralized,” Tisch confirmed. The investigation is ongoing.
