Tue Jul 29 02:40:40 UTC 2025: **Headline: Thailand Accuses Cambodia of Violating Ceasefire Agreement**

**Bangkok, Thailand** – The fragile ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia, intended to halt deadly clashes in the disputed border region, is under threat after the Thai army accused Cambodian forces of violating the hours-old truce.

According to a statement released by Thai army spokesman Major-General Winthai Suvaree, Cambodian forces launched armed attacks into Thai territory after the midnight ceasefire agreement took effect. Winthai asserted that Thailand was “compelled to respond appropriately, exercising its legitimate right to self-defence,” adding that the retaliatory actions were carried out “appropriately” and in “self-defence.”

The accusations come despite an agreement reached in Malaysia for an unconditional ceasefire, aimed at ending five days of fighting that has claimed the lives of at least 38 people and displaced nearly 300,000.

Acting Thai Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai downplayed the reported violations, stating he had spoken with Cambodia’s defense minister and maintained that the situation was calm. “There is no escalation. Right now things are calm,” he told reporters.

Contradicting the Thai claims, a spokesperson for the Cambodian Defence Ministry, Maly Socheata, said there had been no fighting along the border since the agreement. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet also stated on Facebook that the front line had eased since the ceasefire.

Reports from Al Jazeera correspondents indicate conflicting accounts from the ground. While the Thai military reported “a couple of clashes in several areas along the border,” a correspondent in Cambodia reported local residents not hearing “any exchange of fire overnight and this morning.”

Military commanders from both sides are scheduled to meet Tuesday morning to discuss the alleged violations and to further ease tensions. A cross-border committee is also slated to convene in Cambodia on August 4th.

The recent flare-up in violence has been the deadliest since similar incidents occurred between 2008 and 2011 over the disputed border territory. The international community is watching closely, hoping the ceasefire can be salvaged and a lasting peace can be established between the two Southeast Asian nations.
