**Siouxland Braces for Extreme Heat, Severe Storms, and Possible Derecho**
Sioux City, IA – Siouxland residents are urged to prepare for a dangerous combination of extreme heat and severe weather beginning Monday. KTIV meteorologists are forecasting daytime highs in the mid-90s, with heat index values soaring between 100 and 115 degrees throughout Monday afternoon and evening. An Extreme Heat Warning will be in effect.
Adding to the danger, the Storm Prediction Center has placed much of South Dakota and southwestern Minnesota under a Moderate and Enhanced risk of severe weather. While a derecho is most likely in those areas, KTIV meteorologists are closely monitoring a second developing system that could impact Siouxland.
“Our counties and towns along and north of Highway 20 face the greatest risk of both a derecho and strong to severe thunderstorms,” reports KTIV. The primary threat window is between 8 PM Monday and 12 AM Tuesday, with potential wind gusts reaching or exceeding 70 miles per hour. Residents are advised to secure loose objects and have a plan in place in case of power outages.
Tuesday will offer little relief from the heat, with highs in the 80s and low 90s and heat index values remaining in the 100-105 degree range. Additional storms are possible Tuesday night into Wednesday.
Wednesday brings a high likelihood of rain and thunderstorms, with concerns about potential excessive rainfall. KTIV will be closely monitoring the situation for possible flooding risks.
Fortunately, a welcome change is on the horizon. By Thursday, cooler temperatures will arrive, with daytime highs expected to remain in the 70s and 80s through the weekend.
