**New York, NY** – A shooting in midtown Manhattan on Monday evening left at least four people dead, including a New York Police Department officer. The gunman, identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura of Las Vegas, is also deceased, reportedly from a self-inflicted injury.
The incident unfolded at approximately 6:40 PM at 345 Park Avenue, a skyscraper housing major financial firms like Blackstone, KPMG, and Deutsche Bank, as well as the NFL headquarters. According to police sources, Tamura, wearing a bullet-resistant vest and armed with an AR-style rifle, opened fire in the building’s lobby after exchanging fire with an NYPD officer. He then proceeded to the 33rd floor and barricaded himself, prompting a lockdown of the area near Grand Central Station, Rockefeller Center, and the Museum of Modern Art.
Police Commissioner Jessica Disch confirmed the scene was contained and the “lone shooter has been neutralized.” While details remain limited, initial reports indicate Tamura had a concealed carry license for a handgun and a previously expired private investigator license. Fox News reported that at least six people were shot, including the deceased police officer.
Mayor Eric Adams expressed his condolences to the officer’s family. The shooting marks the 254th mass shooting in the United States this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive.
Local officials, including mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani and Governor Kathy Hochul, have expressed their grief and concern in response to the tragedy. The investigation is ongoing.
