**New Delhi, July 24, 2025** – A significant shortage of teachers is impacting Kendriya Vidyalayas and Navodaya Vidyalayas across India, with over 12,000 positions currently vacant, according to the Ministry of Education. Union Minister of State for Education Jayant Chaudhary revealed the figures in a written response to the Rajya Sabha yesterday.

The data shows 7,765 vacant teacher posts in the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan and 4,323 in the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti. Minister Chaudhary attributed the vacancies to several factors, including the establishment of new schools, employee retirements, resignations, promotions, transfers, and employees on leave.

“Filling up these vacancies is a continuous process,” stated Chaudhary, adding that the government is taking necessary steps in accordance with recruitment rules. To mitigate the impact on students, contractual teachers are being employed on a temporary basis.

Beyond these school systems, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) also has 143 vacancies in Group A academic posts, and the National Council for Teacher Education has 60 vacancies. The recruitment processes for these positions are underway.
