**New Delhi, July 25, 2025:** Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached a significant milestone today, surpassing Indira Gandhi to become the second-longest serving Prime Minister of India in consecutive terms. He has now served 4,078 days, exceeding Gandhi’s unbroken term of 4,077 days (January 24, 1966 to March 24, 1977).
This achievement marks a notable moment in Indian political history. Mr. Modi is the first Prime Minister born after India’s independence to hold this distinction and the longest-serving Prime Minister from a non-Hindi speaking state.
While Jawaharlal Nehru remains the record holder for the longest unbroken term, Mr. Modi has matched Nehru’s accomplishment of leading his respective party to victory in three consecutive Lok Sabha elections.
Prior to becoming Prime Minister in 2014, Mr. Modi served as Chief Minister of Gujarat from 2001. His combined tenure as an elected head of government, both at the state and national level, is the longest in Indian history. Furthermore, Mr. Modi is the only non-Congress leader to have completed two full terms as Prime Minister.
Officials also emphasized Mr. Modi’s unprecedented record of winning six consecutive elections as the leader of a party – in Gujarat assembly polls in 2002, 2007, and 2012, and in the national elections of 2014, 2019, and 2024.
