Thu Jul 24 19:33:37 UTC 2025: ## News Article: Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery Successfully Removes Large Kidney Tumor in Chennai Woman
**Chennai, July 25, 2025** – Doctors at the Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology (AINU) in Chennai have successfully performed an advanced laparoscopic surgery to remove a 10-centimeter kidney tumor from a 76-year-old woman. The procedure, led by Dr. Arun Kumar Balakrishnan, Managing Director, Chief Urologist, Uro-Oncologist and Robotic Surgeon at AINU, offered a less invasive alternative to traditional open surgery, which posed significant risks to the patient due to her low weight (35 kg) and existing health conditions.
The tumor was discovered incidentally during a routine health check-up, highlighting the often symptomless nature of kidney cancer. Dr. Balakrishnan emphasized the benefits of laparoscopic surgery, including minimal blood loss, avoidance of large incisions, reduced post-operative pain, faster recovery, and shorter hospital stays. The patient was discharged just three days after the surgery.
“Kidney cancers are on the rise, but often without noticeable symptoms,” Dr. Balakrishnan stated during a press conference. He further stressed the importance of regular medical check-ups, including ultrasound scans, for early detection, especially for individuals with a family history of kidney cancer. He noted that 95% of kidney cancers are discovered incidentally, with the remaining 5% presenting in advanced stages.
D. Venkat Subramaniam, Executive Director and Senior Urologist at AINU, was also present at the press conference. The successful procedure underscores the advancements in minimally invasive surgical techniques and their potential to improve patient outcomes, especially in complex cases.
