**IIT Guwahati Students Protest “Steep” Fee Hike, Institute Cites Enhanced Welfare**

**Guwahati, July 25, 2025:** Research scholars and post-graduate students at the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT-G) have initiated protests against a recent fee hike, which they deem “steep” and implemented without proper consultation. Students claim the ₹8,900 per semester increase blindsided them, appearing unexpectedly on the fee payment portal without prior notice to the 8,500-strong student body.

Protestors began demonstrating on July 22 after talks with IIT-G management failed to yield a resolution. They are demanding official guarantees that no penalties or fellowship deductions will result from delayed fee payments, given the revised fee structure.

IIT-G administration defends the fee revision, the first in seven years, as a necessary measure to support “enhanced student welfare and activities.” The institute released a statement citing increased allocations for hostel events, cultural and sports festivals, and initiatives beyond Inter-IIT participation.

The statement further claims a four-hour open discussion was held on July 17 where clarifications were provided. Students were also informed about loan provisions through the Students’ Welfare Fund. The institute says it asked for student feedback but received none.

“Suddenly, on July 22, a small group of students gathered… protesting without any prior notice and without submitting any representation of their concerns,” the statement read. IIT-G also emphasized that the majority of students are not participating in the demonstrations.

The protests are ongoing as students seek further dialogue and assurances from the administration.
