**Kolkata, India – July 24, 2025** – As World IVF Day approaches, fertility experts in Kolkata are advocating for the integration of genetic screening as a standard practice in IVF treatment. Speaking at a session titled “Decode Infertility with Genetics” held yesterday, doctors from Genome – The Fertility Centre emphasized the potential of Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT) to significantly improve IVF success rates and reduce the risk of failed pregnancies and inherited disorders.

PGT involves screening embryos for genetic abnormalities before implantation, allowing doctors to select only healthy embryos. This can be particularly beneficial for couples struggling with infertility, those with a history of recurrent pregnancy loss, or those who are carriers of serious inherited conditions like Thalassemia or Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA).

“PGT helps to determine if the baby would be born with inherited disorders…before the pregnancy even occurs,” said Dr. Sujay Das Gupta, Director of Clinical Services at Genome.

Emili Banerjee, Medical Geneticist at Genome, highlighted that genetic screening isn’t just for infertile couples. She added that couples who have no other reproductive problems can be unknowingly affected by genetic conditions.

The session also addressed the misconception that couples with genetic issues must resort to sperm or egg donation, adoption, or foregoing childbearing altogether. PGT offers a viable alternative, enabling them to conceive healthy children.
