**Tamil Nadu Woman Dies After Self-Immolation, Alleging Sexual Harassment and Dowry Abuse**
**Ramanathapuram, Tamil Nadu** – A 32-year-old woman from Ramanathapuram district, identified as Ranjitha, has tragically died after setting herself on fire, allegedly due to years of abuse including sexual harassment by her father-in-law and constant demands for dowry from her in-laws.
Ranjitha succumbed to her severe burns at the Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai, despite medical intervention. In a heartbreaking video recorded as her dying declaration, Ranjitha claimed her father-in-law’s inappropriate behavior drove her to take the extreme step. “My father-in-law hugged me. I couldn’t take it. That’s why I immolated myself,” she stated.
Adding to the gravity of the situation, Ranjitha’s son, a class seven student, has corroborated her claims, stating that she had confided in him about the sexual harassment. The family further alleges that Ranjitha endured 13 years of torture, including demands for a plot of land and more gold as dowry. Her sister, Alagasundari, revealed that Ranjitha’s husband would allegedly drink, beat her, and pressure her to endure the abuse silently.
Local police have registered a case and are investigating the circumstances surrounding Ranjitha’s death. A senior police officer confirmed the investigation into the sexual harassment allegations. While the age of the marriage may complicate the application of the Dowry Prohibition Act, authorities have stated they are examining all angles.
This tragic incident has sparked outrage and ignited renewed concerns about the safety and well-being of women facing abuse within their marital homes in India. Activists are calling for a comprehensive and sensitive investigation to ensure justice for Ranjitha.
