Wed Jul 23 18:58:30 UTC 2025: **Hyderabad Resident Duped Out of ₹35 Lakh in Elaborate CBI Impersonation Scam**

**Hyderabad, July 24, 2025** – A 79-year-old man from Domalguda, Hyderabad, has lost ₹35.74 lakh (approximately $42,000 USD) to sophisticated fraudsters posing as Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officials. The elaborate scam, which unfolded over ten days, involved manipulating the victim into transferring his life savings under the false pretense of a money laundering investigation.

The incident began on July 6th when the victim received a call from an individual claiming to be “Vijay Khanna,” a CBI officer from Mumbai’s Colaba police station. The caller alleged that a bank account registered in the victim’s name was linked to illicit money laundering operations and cited a fabricated FIR number and false Supreme Court orders to support his claims.

Over multiple phone calls, the scammers intimidated the elderly man, warning him against disclosing the matter to anyone under the guise of national security. They presented the investigation as being monitored by the Supreme Court and pressured him to cooperate.

The fraudsters convinced the victim to transfer funds from his account to designated bank accounts, promising the money would be returned once the investigation was complete. Another individual, identifying himself as “Ayush Gupta,” further pressured the victim to comply.

Between July 6th and 16th, the victim transferred a total of ₹35,74,094. He was later informed that he had been cleared and instructed to retrieve his money from the nearest crime branch office. It was only then that he realized he had been defrauded.

The victim has since filed a complaint with the cyber crime police station in Hyderabad, where a case has been registered. An investigation is underway to trace the fraudulent accounts and identify the perpetrators.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the increasing sophistication of cyber scams targeting vulnerable individuals. Authorities urge the public to be vigilant and verify any communication from law enforcement agencies through official channels before taking any action.
