**Flash Flood Warning Issued for Northeast and Mid-Atlantic as Summer Storms Intensify**

AccuWeather meteorologists are warning residents across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions of an increased risk of flash flooding this week, fueled by high humidity and intense summer heat. Slow-moving thunderstorms capable of producing torrential rainfall are expected, raising concerns for urban and small stream locations.

“There is a clear trend showing that both the frequency and intensity of summer thunderstorms capable of producing flash-flooding have increased in recent decades,” said AccuWeather Vice President of Forecast Operations Dan DePodwin.

The National Weather Service in Norton, MA, anticipates thunderstorms and showers associated with a cold front moving through the area on Thursday, particularly in western/central Massachusetts and northern Connecticut, with the afternoon posing the highest risk. While New England and northern New York may be spared the worst of the downpours, areas further south face a greater threat. In the most extreme scenarios, rainfall could reach 2-4 inches in a matter of hours, mirroring the life-threatening flooding witnessed recently in parts of New Jersey, eastern Pennsylvania, and New York City.

Cities at risk from Wednesday night through Thursday include New York City, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Pittsburgh, Cleveland, and Columbus, Ohio.

Authorities urge residents to be prepared. “Flash-floods are not only life-threatening, but they can also cause extensive property damage that is costly to repair,” DePodwin cautions, advising homeowners to ensure they have adequate flood insurance coverage.

While Thursday carries the highest immediate risk, the forecast indicates a shift towards drier and more seasonable weather by the weekend.
