**Tornado Watch in Effect for Milwaukee Area as Storms Sweep Across Wisconsin**

Milwaukee, WI – A tornado watch is in effect for the Milwaukee area and over 30 other Wisconsin counties until 6 p.m. today, July 16, as multiple tornadoes have been spotted in central Wisconsin, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). The watch area extends north to Green Bay and includes Dane, Ozaukee, Waukesha, Kenosha, and Racine counties.

While the Milwaukee metro area is currently under a tornado watch, some parts of central Wisconsin are facing a more immediate threat with tornado warnings issued earlier today. Western Fond du Lac and southeastern Dodge counties were under a warning that expired at 4 p.m., after a tornado was spotted near Waupun. Another tornado was confirmed earlier in Mazomanie, Dane County.

NWS Milwaukee/Sullivan meteorologist Ben Miller stated that while the central Wisconsin storms are unlikely to impact Milwaukee, additional storms are expected to develop in southeast Wisconsin between 4 and 6 p.m. These storms are predicted to be short-lived with heavy rainfall, and widespread flooding is not anticipated.

“We’re expecting everything to be east and out to the lake by 6 p.m.,” Miller said.

The potential for severe weather has already led to the cancellation of the truck and tractor pulls at the Waukesha County Fair today.

A tornado watch does not mean a tornado has formed, but rather indicates that conditions are favorable for tornado development. The NWS urges residents in the affected areas to have a plan in place in the event a tornado forms. Heavy rain and thunderstorms are also expected for the Milwaukee area this afternoon and evening.

The NWS offers the following safety advice should a tornado develop:

* **If Driving:** Do not attempt to outrun a tornado, especially on highways. Seek shelter in a sturdy building.
* **Last Resort:** If no sturdy building is available, lie flat in the nearest depression, ditch, or culvert, and cover your head with your arms.
