Wed Jul 16 13:30:29 UTC 2025: **Madhya Pradesh Government U-Turns on Bridge Project Halt After Public Outcry**

**Bhopal, India** – The Madhya Pradesh Public Works Department (PWD) has performed a dramatic about-face on its decision to halt 355 infrastructure projects, including 140 flyovers and railway overbridges (ROBs) worth Rs 1,200 crores. The initial decision followed intense public scrutiny and ridicule over bizarrely angled bridge designs in Indore and Bhopal, with some structures resembling “origami experiments.”

Just as engineers and contractors were preparing to cease construction, the PWD revoked its order, claiming it was issued “by mistake.” Chief Engineer PC Verma, who initially signed the cancellation, confirmed the reversal. The department now insists that no projects have been halted and that it is only “tightening bolts” on quality control and technical oversight.

The debacle was triggered by public outrage over poorly designed infrastructure projects, most notably the Aishbagh ROB in Bhopal, infamous for its sharp 90-degree turns. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav recently ordered action against those responsible, suspending eight engineers, including two Chief Engineers, and initiating an inquiry against a retired Superintending Engineer. The construction agency and design consultant involved in the faulty blueprint have been blacklisted.

In response to the growing criticism, the state government has formed a high-level technical committee to meticulously examine all existing and under-construction flyovers and ROBs. This panel, composed of PWD, Madhya Pradesh Road Development Corporation (MPRDC), Railway, and Municipal Corporation officials, will assess design, alignment, height, speed limits, and safety norms. External experts may also be consulted.

Furthermore, the government has mandated departmental exams for engineers, with future postings dependent on performance. The MPRDC has been tasked with developing a comprehensive training module for engineers, focusing on Indian Roads Congress (IRC) codes and Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) guidelines.

The Aishbagh ROB in Bhopal will remain closed until the design flaws are rectified. This saga highlights the importance of sound engineering practices and rigorous oversight in infrastructure development.
