Thu Jul 17 03:05:56 UTC 2025: **Summary:**

The Amarnath Yatra, an annual Hindu pilgrimage to a cave shrine in Jammu and Kashmir, has been suspended on July 17, 2025, due to heavy rainfall in the region. This suspension impacts both the Baltal and Pahalgam base camps. The decision follows a weather advisory predicting more heavy rain and a recent landslide that resulted in the death of one pilgrim and injuries to three others. Restoration work is underway by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) to repair the tracks. While pilgrims already at Panjtami camp are being allowed to proceed towards Baltal, the resumption of the Yatra from both base camps is contingent on improved weather conditions. Over 2.47 lakh pilgrims have already visited the shrine since the beginning of the Yatra on July 3rd, with more than 4 lakh people having registered online.

**Amarnath Yatra Halted Due to Torrential Rains; Pilgrim Fatality Reported**

**Jammu, July 17, 2025** – The annual Amarnath Yatra has been suspended today due to relentless heavy rainfall across the Jammu and Kashmir region. Officials announced the suspension, citing a weather advisory predicting further downpours in the area. The Yatra has been halted from both the Pahalgam and Baltal base camps.

The decision comes a day after a tragic incident in which a woman pilgrim lost her life and three others sustained injuries in a landslide along the Baltal route in the Ganderbal district.

“Shri Amarnathji Yatra has been suspended for 17.07.2025 from both Pahalgam and Baltal base camps,” confirmed Kashmir Divisional Commissioner Vijay Kumar Bhiduri. “Continuous heavy rains over the last two days have necessitated restoration work to be carried out on tracks along both routes.”

While the Yatra remains suspended, pilgrims who stayed overnight at the Panjtami camp are being permitted to proceed towards Baltal under the supervision and assistance of Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and Mountain Rescue Teams.

The BRO has deployed personnel and heavy machinery to expedite the necessary repairs on the affected tracks. Officials remain optimistic that the Yatra can resume from both base camps as early as tomorrow, Friday, July 18th, contingent on favorable weather conditions.

This marks the first suspension of the Yatra from Jammu this year.

Despite the interruption, the pilgrimage has already seen substantial participation, with over 2.47 lakh pilgrims having paid their respects at the 3,880-metre-high shrine since it commenced on July 3rd. More than 4 lakh individuals have registered online for this year’s pilgrimage. Since July 2nd, when Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha flagged off the first batch, over 1,01,553 pilgrims have departed from the Jammu base camp.

Last year, the Amarnath cave shrine, housing a naturally formed ice lingam, welcomed over 5.10 lakh pilgrims. The 38-day pilgrimage is scheduled to conclude on August 9th.
