**Uttarakhand Schools to Integrate Bhagavad Gita and Ramayana into Curriculum**
*Dehradun, July 16, 2025* – The Uttarakhand government has requested the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) to include the Bhagavad Gita and the Ramayana in the syllabus of its 17,000 government schools, Education Minister Dhan Singh Rawat announced on Wednesday.
The decision, made during a meeting between the Education department and the Chief Minister, aims to introduce students to India’s rich cultural and religious heritage. According to Minister Rawat, students will begin reciting verses from the texts during daily prayer sessions until the new syllabus is formally implemented.
This move aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes connecting students with India’s civilizational roots. NCERT recently released a new textbook, “Veena,” designed to do just that. “Veena” includes chapters such as “Ganga ki Kahani,” which traces the journey of the Ganga River, and “AI,” an introduction to Artificial Intelligence for middle school students, promoting both cultural awareness and scientific thinking.
NCERT is in the process of rolling out updated textbooks for various classes. While some books have already been released, the remaining are expected by the end of the year.
This integration of religious texts into the curriculum is expected to spark debate surrounding the separation of religion and state, and the balance between cultural education and inclusivity. The government maintains that the initiative aims to provide a holistic education that celebrates India’s heritage while fostering critical thinking.
