Wed Jul 16 10:50:00 UTC 2025: ## Twin Cities Braces for Severe Storms After Scorching Heat
**MINNEAPOLIS, MN -** The Twin Cities metro area and much of Minnesota are under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 10 p.m. Tuesday, as a potent combination of extreme heat and an approaching cold front sets the stage for potentially dangerous weather. The National Weather Service warns of gusty winds, flash flooding, large hail, and a very low risk of isolated tornadoes.
Earlier in the day, residents are enduring a heat advisory, which remains in effect until 8 p.m. Temperatures are expected to reach the low 90s, but with high humidity, the “feels like” temperature will climb into the mid to upper 90s.
According to FOX 9 Meteorologist Cody Matz, the storms are expected to develop in northwestern Minnesota and strengthen as they move southeast. While the Twin Cities metro faces a level 1 “marginal risk” of severe weather, central and western Minnesota are under a level 2 “slight risk.”
“We’re looking at the potential for hail, strong wind gusts exceeding 60 mph, and localized downpours,” Matz said. “While the tornado risk is low, it’s still something to be aware of.”
The stormy weather is expected to linger into Wednesday morning, with lighter showers continuing through the afternoon and evening. The good news is that the cold front will bring a welcome relief from the heat, with temperatures remaining in the 70s from Wednesday through Friday.
While the weekend forecast suggests a chance of a few rumbles on Saturday, temperatures will be back in the upper 70s to lower 80s.
Minnesotans are urged to stay informed of the latest weather updates and take necessary precautions, including securing outdoor objects and having a plan in case of severe weather.
