Mon Jul 14 22:37:29 UTC 2025: ## Supreme Court Greenlights Trump Administration’s Education Department Overhaul

**Washington D.C.** – The Supreme Court has cleared the path for the Trump administration to move forward with its controversial plans to significantly reduce the size and scope of the Department of Education. In a ruling Monday, the court lifted a lower court order that had blocked the administration from laying off nearly 1,400 employees and transferring key functions to other federal agencies.

The decision, hailed by Trump as a “Major Victory to Parents and Students,” allows the administration to proceed with what critics call a de facto dismantling of the department established by Congress in 1979. While the legal challenge continues in lower courts, the Supreme Court’s decision effectively allows the Trump administration to execute its plan, potentially rendering further litigation moot.

“Even if Trump loses the litigation…effectively everyone will have been fired already… and so they will have succeeded without having had to go to Congress to formally ask [for] the Department of Education’s dissolution,” reported Al Jazeera’s Shihab Rattansi.

Secretary of Education Linda McMahon praised the ruling, stating it affirmed the president’s authority to make decisions about staffing and operations. The Trump administration argues that these changes are necessary to streamline the department and return control over education to the states.

However, critics warn that the move will cripple the department’s ability to oversee student loans, enforce civil rights law in education, and ensure equal access to learning for all students. Democracy Forward, a liberal legal group representing school districts and unions, called the ruling a “devastating blow to this nation’s promise of public education for all children.”

The three liberal justices dissented, arguing that the ruling presents a “grave” threat to the Constitution’s separation of powers. “As Congress mandated, the Department plays a vital role in this Nation’s education system, safeguarding equal access to learning and channeling billions of dollars to schools and students across the country each year,” they wrote.

This latest Supreme Court decision adds to a growing trend of rulings favoring the Trump administration’s assertion of executive power, raising concerns about the balance of power between the branches of government. The implications for the future of the Department of Education and the federal government’s role in education remain to be seen.
