Tue Jul 15 06:40:00 UTC 2025: ## Tesla Officially Enters Indian Market with Model Y Launch, Driverless Feature Sparks Debate

**Mumbai, July 15, 2025** – After years of anticipation, Elon Musk’s Tesla has officially announced its entry into the Indian market, launching the “Tesla Model Y” today. The electric car, boasting full self-driving capabilities, is generating both excitement and concern due to its autonomous driving feature.

The Model Y is offered in Rear Wheel Drive and Long Range variants, with the option to unlock “Full Self-Driving Capability” for an additional ₹6 lakh. This feature enables driverless operation, raising questions about safety and liability on Indian roads.

The launch has reignited debate on the ethics and legality of driverless vehicles, drawing parallels to a fictional scenario depicted in the Amazon Prime series “Guilty Minds.” The show features a court case involving a fatal accident involving a driverless car. The court ruled that all parties were equally responsible, and noone could be held solely liable.

Currently, India does not permit driverless cars on public roads. Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road Transport and Highways, stated in December 2023 that he would never allow driverless cars in India, citing potential job losses for drivers.

Tesla inaugurated its first Indian showroom in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex today, with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis officiating the launch. The on-road price for the Model Y entry-level model is ₹61.07 lakh in Mumbai and ₹66.07 lakh in Gurugram, including GST.

The Model Y Rear Wheel Drive offers two battery pack options (60 kWh and 75 kWh), providing a range of 500 km and 622 km respectively (WLTP certified). The battery can be charged for approximately 238 km to 267 km of driving range in just 15 minutes using a Supercharger.
