**WASHINGTON D.C.** – In a significant shift in policy, U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a stark warning to Russia, demanding a resolution to the Ukraine war within 50 days or facing unprecedented economic sanctions. The announcement came Monday during a meeting with NATO chief Mark Rutte at the White House, where Trump outlined a plan to bolster Ukraine’s defenses with substantial infusions of weaponry.

“We’re very, very unhappy with Russia,” Trump told reporters, announcing plans for “very severe tariffs” of approximately 100 percent if a deal is not reached within the imposed deadline. These tariffs would target Russia’s remaining trade partners, aiming to cripple Moscow’s ability to withstand existing Western sanctions.

Alongside the ultimatum, Trump and Rutte unveiled a new agreement where NATO would purchase billions of dollars worth of arms, including Patriot anti-missile batteries, from the United States for distribution to Ukraine. “This is billions of dollars worth of military equipment…and that’s going to be quickly distributed to the battlefield,” Trump stated.

This move marks a notable pivot from Trump’s earlier attempts at rapprochement with Russian President Vladimir Putin, a policy shift that initially sparked concern in Kyiv. While previously refraining from openly criticizing Putin, Trump now described him as a “tough guy,” while hinting at tougher descriptions.

The announcement follows escalating Russian attacks in recent weeks, resulting in a three-year high in civilian casualties in Ukraine, according to UN figures. Last week Trump already teased an announcement to send vital Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine

The shift in U.S. policy has been welcomed in Ukraine. President Volodymyr Zelensky praised the “important signals of support,” and a Ukrainian soldier on the front lines expressed relief at the prospect of enhanced air defenses.

Meanwhile, Russian forces claimed to have captured additional territory in eastern Ukraine, while also allegedly killing three civilians in the Kharkiv and Sumy regions. In Kyiv, Zelensky proposed a major political shake-up, recommending economy minister Yulia Svyrydenko as the new prime minister.
