**India’s Options Limited as Kerala Nurse Faces Imminent Execution in Yemen**

**New Delhi, July 15** – The Supreme Court was informed on Monday that the Indian government has exhausted all possible avenues to prevent the execution of Nimisha Priya, a Kerala nurse sentenced to death in Yemen for the murder of a man she claims was harassing her. Priya is scheduled to be executed on Wednesday, July 17.

Attorney General R Venkataramani stated that the government has reached its limit in intervening in the case. Efforts to secure a pardon from the victim’s family by offering “blood money” (financial compensation) of $1 million (Rs 8.5 crore) have been unsuccessful. The family has reportedly refused the offer, citing a matter of honor.

Advocate Subhash Chandran KR, representing the “Save Nimisha Priya International Action Council,” highlighted the diplomatic challenges, noting that Priya is being held in a region controlled by the rebel Houthi group, limiting the government’s outreach.

Priya’s case stems from events in 2017, where she allegedly sedated Talal Abdo Mehdi, her Yemeni business partner, in an attempt to retrieve her passport after he subjected her to constant harassment and financial exploitation. Mehdi died as a result, leading to Priya’s arrest and subsequent death sentence.

While Yemeni law allows for “blood money” to be accepted as a pardon, the victim’s family’s refusal has left Priya with limited options. The Indian government says it has made informal attempts to engage with Yemeni leaders, but those efforts have not been successful.

Activists following the case maintain that a pardon from the victim’s family is Priya’s only hope.
