The location where the family was residing had been deemed hazardous following a landslide in July 2024. Police officials convinced the woman that the cave was an unsafe environment for herself and her children.

A search operation led by the Gokarna police and forest officials resulted in the recovery of Kutina’s passport and expired visa. Authorities stated that an exit permit was issued by the Foreigners Regional Registration Office in Goa in 2018, after which she traveled to Nepal before returning to India.

The trio has been transferred to the Foreigners Restriction Centre for Women in Tumakuru pending repatriation. The case is currently under investigation, according to M. Narayana, Superintendent of Police, Uttara Kannada district.
