**Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari Dies at 82, Burial Set for Tuesday**

LONDON – Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, who led the nation from 2015 to 2023, has died in London at the age of 82 after a prolonged illness. Buhari’s body will be repatriated to Nigeria and buried in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, on Tuesday, according to state governor Dikko Umaru Radda.

Preparations are underway in Daura for the burial. Vice President Kashim Shettima is currently in London overseeing the repatriation process.

Buhari, who also served as a military leader in the 1980s, is being remembered as a key figure in Nigeria’s democratic evolution. He was the first opposition candidate to win the presidency since the country’s return to civilian rule.

President Bola Tinubu has ordered national flags to fly at half-mast for seven days and promised a full state funeral, calling Buhari “a patriot, a soldier, a statesman” who led with “quiet strength, profound integrity, and an unshakable belief in Nigeria’s potential.”

While lauded for his integrity and efforts to combat corruption, Buhari’s presidency also faced criticism for its failure to significantly improve the economy or adequately address security challenges, including the rise of Boko Haram. Former military ruler Ibrahim Babangida, who ousted Buhari in 1985, acknowledged their disagreements but affirmed Buhari’s sincerity and patriotism.
