**New Delhi, India** – The Supreme Court of India is set to hear a petition today concerning Nimisha Priya, an Indian nurse facing imminent execution in Yemen. The petition urges the central government to utilize diplomatic channels to help save Priya, who is scheduled to be executed on July 16th.

Priya was sentenced to death in Yemen for the 2017 murder of Yemeni national Talal Abdo, her business partner. The petition before the Supreme Court focuses on the possibility of “blood money,” a form of compensation accepted under Sharia law in Yemen, to be paid to the victim’s family.

Advocate Subhash Chandra K.R., who filed the petition, argues that offering blood money could potentially lead the victim’s family to pardon Priya, thereby halting the execution. Priya’s family has reportedly offered 8.6 crore rupees as blood money in hopes of securing her release.

According to court documents, Priya allegedly sedated and murdered Talal Abdo in July 2017, dismembering his body with the help of another nurse and disposing of the remains in an underground tank. Following the discovery of the murder, Priya was arrested and allegedly confessed to the crime.

While Priya exhausted all legal avenues, including appealing to Yemen’s Supreme Court and seeking presidential pardon, the appeals were rejected.

The hearing, before Justices Vikram Seth and Sandeep Mehta, comes as Priya’s execution date draws near, placing immense pressure on diplomatic efforts to secure her life. The outcome of the hearing will likely determine the course of action the Indian government will take in this urgent matter.
