**Air India Dreamliner Crash: Engines Shut Down Mid-Air, Investigation Focuses on Fuel Cutoff Switches**
Ahmedabad, India – A preliminary report into the devastating Air India Dreamliner crash in Ahmedabad on June 12th has revealed that both engines of the Boeing 787-8 shut down mid-air just seconds after takeoff, killing all 270 people on board. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) report highlights the activation of fuel cutoff switches as a key area of investigation.
According to the report, the fuel control switches abruptly transitioned from the “RUN” to “CUTOFF” position within a single second of each other, starving the engines of fuel. A chilling exchange from the cockpit voice recording reveals the pilots’ confusion, with one asking, “Why did you cut off?” and the other replying, “I didn’t.”
The report confirms that the Ram Air Turbine (RAT) was deployed, indicating a complete loss of power and thrust. CCTV footage shows the RAT deploying immediately after liftoff, as the aircraft began to lose altitude.
Data from the black box indicates that while the pilots managed to move the switches back to the “RUN” position, only one engine showed signs of recovery. The aircraft crashed 32 seconds after takeoff, traveling less than a nautical mile before impacting the BJ Medical College Hostel.
The AAIB has found no immediate evidence of sabotage. The report also revealed that the flap setting and landing gear position were normal for takeoff.
Investigators are also examining a 2018 advisory from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regarding potential issues with the fuel control switch locking feature. While the FAA advisory was not mandatory, Air India had not carried out the suggested inspections.
The report rules out weather conditions as a contributing factor, noting clear skies, good visibility, and moderate winds. The pilots were also deemed medically fit, rested, and experienced. The investigation continues to determine the cause of the fuel cutoff switch activation and whether the FAA advisory played a role in the crash.
