Tue Jul 08 09:51:02 UTC 2025: ## Poland Reinstates Border Checks Amid Migration Concerns, German Friction

**Warsaw, Poland** – The Polish government has reintroduced temporary border checks with Germany and Lithuania, citing a surge in undocumented migrants and escalating public anxiety surrounding immigration. The move, announced by Prime Minister Donald Tusk on Monday, aims to redirect migration routes that currently circumvent barriers on the Belarusian border by passing through neighboring Latvia and Lithuania.

“We need to redirect this stream of people, which is deflected by our barrier, but which wants to cross Poland again through the border with Latvia and Lithuania, and further into Europe,” Tusk stated.

The decision comes as irregular migration fuels tensions across Europe, with Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands already implementing similar measures within the Schengen Area. Germany, which has maintained controls on its border with Poland since 2023, recently tightened its policies, rejecting undocumented arrivals and returning them to Poland under existing agreements. Polish officials claim this places an undue burden on their country.

German envoy Knut Abraham warned that the renewed checks could disrupt trade and cause traffic congestion without significantly curbing migration. Similar concerns were echoed by Rafal Gronicz, mayor of the border town of Zgorzelec, who dismissed fears of a migrant crisis as exaggerated.

Polish Interior Minister Tomasz Siemoniak indicated that the checks would be lifted once Germany ends its stricter border controls. “If Germany lifts its controls, we are not going to delay either,” he said. “We want this movement to be absolutely free.”

The move also follows a series of recent incidents in Poland, including the murder of a young woman in Torun, allegedly by a Venezuelan national, and a fatal stabbing during a brawl in Nowe, involving Polish and Colombian nationals. These incidents have sparked public outrage and fueled anti-immigrant sentiment, leading to protests and increased activity by far-right groups.

Some nationalist groups have begun patrolling the western border, claiming to protect Poland from migrant flows. These vigilante efforts have been condemned by human rights organizations, who warn they promote xenophobia and undermine trust in official institutions.

The Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights stated, “The actions of these self-proclaimed groups are the result of a radicalising political narrative. Debate on migration should be grounded in facts, not fear.”

The reinstatement of border checks highlights the growing challenges facing the EU as it navigates complex migration issues and attempts to balance security concerns with the principles of free movement within the Schengen Area.
