**Fritz Advances to Wimbledon Quarterfinals as American Men Continue Grand Slam Surge**
**WIMBLEDON, England –** American Taylor Fritz has secured his spot in the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the third time in four years after his opponent, Jordan Thompson of Australia, retired due to injury. Thompson, visibly hampered by back and leg issues, was trailing 6-1, 3-0 when he called the match after just 41 minutes.
Fritz’s advancement marks the fifth consecutive major tournament in which at least one American man has reached the quarterfinal stage, the longest streak for U.S. men since 2002-2004. He’s joined by fellow American Ben Shelton in the men’s singles draw. Only Sam Querrey and John Isner have reached the Wimbledon semifinals in the past 15 years.
“It’s obviously not the way that I want to go through,” Fritz said of Thompson’s retirement. “It’s just sad… Respect to him for coming out. His body’s not right.”
Fritz will face 17th-seeded Russian Karen Khachanov in the quarterfinals. Khachanov, who reached his second Wimbledon quarterfinal by defeating Kamil Majchrzak in straight sets, is coming off a strong performance, racking up more than twice as many winners as unforced errors. Khachanov has been a Grand Slam semifinalist twice, at the US Open in 2022 and the Australian Open in 2023. Fritz made it to the final at Flushing Meadows in September before losing to No. 1 Jannik Sinner.
Fritz boasts an impressive 12-1 record on grass this season, with title wins at Stuttgart and Eastbourne. His 12 tour-level grass match wins are the most by any American man in a season since Pete Sampras won 12 in 1999.
**Norrie Battles Through to Face Alcaraz**
In other men’s action, the last British singles hope, Cam Norrie, fought his way into the quarterfinals with a grueling 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-7 (7), 6-7 (5), 6-3 victory over Chilean qualifier Nicolas Jarry. The match, lasting 4 hours and 27 minutes, saw Norrie withstand a barrage of 46 aces from Jarry, the most in any match at this year’s tournament.
Norrie will now face two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz for a chance to advance to the semifinals.
