**Mumbai, July 6, 2025:** Chief Justice of India (CJI) Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai addressed the Advocates’ Association of Western India (AAWI) on Saturday, emphasizing the need for pragmatic interpretation of law and the Constitution to serve the present generation’s needs. Speaking at a felicitation organized by the Bombay High Court, CJI Gavai stressed that legal interpretations must be relevant to current societal challenges.

The CJI also addressed concerns about the conduct of some colleagues, urging judges to uphold the reputation of the judiciary. He reminded them that being a judge is not just a job, but a service to society and the nation, requiring dedication and adherence to their oath. “Please do not do anything which brings disrepute to this august institution,” he implored.

Furthermore, CJI Gavai reaffirmed the importance of maintaining judicial independence during the appointment process. He asserted that the collegium ensures merit, diversity, and inclusiveness when selecting judges for the Supreme Court and High Courts.

Later in the evening, during another felicitation, CJI Gavai underscored the Constitution’s importance for every citizen and encouraged dedication to upholding constitutional values and fulfilling constitutional promises.
