**Homa Surprises with Stellar Round at John Deere Classic After Downplaying His Form**
SILVIS, IL – Despite expressing concerns about his game prior to the tournament, Max Homa delivered a stunning performance in the opening round of the John Deere Classic, carding a career-best 8-under 63 at TPC Deere Run. The six-time PGA Tour winner’s impressive round puts him just one stroke behind the clubhouse leader, Doug Ghim.
“I just did everything really solid,” Homa said after his round. “I made a ton of putts. Kept the driver in good spots. Got to take advantage of my iron play, my wedge play.”
Homa’s round was highlighted by nine birdies and a single bogey on his final hole. He gained strokes on the field in all areas, including a significant advantage with his putter. He hit 10 of 14 fairways and 14 of 18 greens in regulation.
This strong start marks a high point in a season of notable changes for Homa, who has switched up his apparel, clubs, coaching, caddie, and even his social media habits. Despite these adjustments, he has yet to record a top-10 finish this year, making Thursday’s performance all the more unexpected.
While Homa acknowledged that his 63 was his best score of the year, he remained cautious about the future. “I mean, I don’t see why not [it being sustainable], but I’m not…worried about it being — it’s not going to be my lasting thought as I leave here today. I played a good round of golf; every day is different.”
Homa is set to tee off Friday at 2 p.m. EDT alongside Jake Knapp and Rickie Fowler.
