Sat Jul 05 05:50:13 UTC 2025: **Dalai Lama Reaffirms Reincarnation Plan, Hopes to Live to 130**
DHARAMSHALA, India – On the eve of his 90th birthday, the Dalai Lama has reaffirmed his commitment to reincarnating after death and expressed hope to live for another 40 years, clarifying succession plans amidst ongoing speculation and geopolitical tensions with China.
Speaking at a ceremony in Dharamshala, the Dalai Lama told thousands of followers that he hopes to serve beings and the Buddha Dharma for the coming years.
The Dalai Lama previously stated in December that he could reach 110 years old.
He confirmed that his successor will be chosen in accordance with traditional Tibetan Buddhist practices, clarifying that the Gaden Phodrang Foundation, established by him to preserve the institution, will be responsible for recognizing his future reincarnation. He emphasized that “no one else has any such authority to interfere in this matter,” a clear message aimed at China.
This announcement, made during a religious conference in Dharamshala, where he has resided since fleeing Tibet in 1959, is seen by some as a direct challenge to Beijing’s claims of authority over the selection of his successor. Tibetan writer and activist Tenzin Tsundue described the Dalai Lama’s announcement on Wednesday as a “punch in the face” for China.
China, which governs the Tibet Autonomous Region, maintains that the Dalai Lama’s succession must be approved by Beijing and carried out using a traditional lottery system involving a golden urn. The Dalai Lama has warned against China’s involvement, suggesting the urn lacks “any spiritual quality” when used dishonestly.
The Dalai Lama, whom China considers a “separatist,” has repeatedly cautioned Beijing against meddling in the reincarnation process of lamas, especially his own. This latest development further intensifies the long-standing dispute over religious authority and the future of Tibetan Buddhism.
