**Grantville, PA** – For those who thought Counting Crows were a relic of the past, Thursday night’s performance at the Penn Heroes Stage at Hollywood Casino proved otherwise. A crowd of enthusiastic Gen Xers flocked to see the 90s hitmakers deliver a set packed with both familiar favorites and fresh material.
The band, who burst onto the scene with their 1993 smash album “August and Everything After,” hasn’t seen significant changes in lineup since the early 2000s. Core members Adam Duritz, David Bryson, Charlie Gillingham, and David Immergluck, have been playing together since their San Francisco Bay area days.
Following an opening set by The Gaslight Anthem, Counting Crows launched into their performance with “Spaceman in Tulsa” from their new album, “Butter Miracle, The Complete Sweets,” before diving into classics like “Mrs. Potter’s Lullaby” and igniting the crowd with their breakout hit, “Mr. Jones.” The setlist weaved together new tracks with beloved anthems, including a cover of Taylor Swift’s “the 1” and the poignant ballad “A Long December.”
Frontman Adam Duritz, known for his introspective lyrics, addressed the audience, sharing his current positive outlook and reflecting on past struggles with dissociative identity disorder, as reflected in the ballad “Colorblind.” He told the crowd, that he’s in a good place now, rocking with his old mates, playing the hits and experimenting with the new, and the music reflected that.
The band’s 90-plus minute set culminated in a three-song encore, featuring the hit “Hangingaround” and closing with “Holiday in Spain,” off the 2003 “Hard Candy” album, what Duritz called a lullaby for his fans, thanking them for sticking around. He expressed his gratitude to the fans who have remained loyal throughout the years. The “Complete Sweets Tour” continues its two-and-a-half-month run across various venues.
