Fri Jul 04 23:30:00 UTC 2025: ## Braves’ Promising Pitcher Schwellenbach Out with Elbow Fracture, Team Re-evaluates Season
**Atlanta, GA – July 2, 2025** – The Atlanta Braves suffered another blow to their pitching rotation as right-hander Spencer Schwellenbach has been placed on the 15-day injured list with a right elbow fracture. The injury, discovered after Schwellenbach experienced soreness following his recent start against the Phillies, will sideline the young pitcher for at least four weeks, potentially jeopardizing his return this season.
“It’s tough news,” said manager Brian Snitker. “Spencer was having a great year, and we were counting on him.”
Schwellenbach, who had a stellar debut season in 2024 with a 3.35 ERA, was exceeding expectations this year, posting a 3.09 ERA in 17 starts. His absence adds to the growing list of injured Braves pitchers, including Reynaldo López, who underwent shoulder surgery, AJ Smith-Shawver, recovering from Tommy John surgery, and Chris Sale, who is on the 60-day IL with a rib cage fracture.
In response to Schwellenbach’s injury, the Braves have recalled left-hander Austin Cox from the minors. The team also reinstated righty Daysbel Hernández from the IL and optioned right-hander Kevin Herget.
In other roster moves, outfielder Jurickson Profar has been reinstated from the restricted list, with outfielder Alex Verdugo being designated for assignment.
With the trade deadline looming on July 31st, the Braves’ front office, led by president of baseball operations Alex Anthopoulos, is reportedly re-evaluating their strategy for the remainder of the season. The team’s current record of 38-46 leaves them seven games out of a playoff spot, making a potential “sell” at the deadline a more likely scenario.
For now, the Braves will move forward with a rotation consisting of Spencer Strider, Grant Holmes, Bryce Elder, and Didier Fuentes.
