Thu Jul 03 19:53:05 UTC 2025: ## Russia Officially Recognizes Taliban Government, a First in the World

**Moscow, Russia** – In a move that signals a significant shift in geopolitical dynamics, Russia has officially recognized the Taliban government in Afghanistan, becoming the first country in the world to do so. The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the acceptance of credentials from Afghanistan’s new ambassador on Thursday, stating this will “give impetus to the development of productive bilateral cooperation” across various sectors.

The move is a culmination of Moscow’s increasing engagement with the Taliban since their return to power in August 2021 following the withdrawal of US troops. The Russian government has framed the Taliban as a potential economic partner and ally in combating terrorism, particularly against the Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISIS-K), which has carried out attacks in both Afghanistan and Russia.

“This brave decision will be an example for others,” stated Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi in a video posted on X, emphasizing Russia’s leading role in recognizing the Taliban.

This decision follows Russia’s Supreme Court’s removal of the Taliban’s “terrorist” designation in April. President Vladimir Putin has even referred to the group as “allies in the fight against terrorism” in recent months.

The recognition is likely to draw scrutiny from Washington, which has frozen billions in Afghan central bank assets and maintains sanctions on certain Taliban leaders, effectively isolating Afghanistan’s banking system from the international financial community.

Russia’s evolving stance on the Taliban marks a sharp turnaround from its previous stance. In 2003, Moscow added the group to its “terrorist” blacklist, citing their support for separatists in the North Caucasus. However, the power vacuum left by the US withdrawal has prompted Russia and other regional players to re-evaluate their strategies and vie for influence in Afghanistan.

Russia has already taken steps to solidify its presence in the country, including opening a business representative office in Kabul shortly after the Taliban takeover and outlining plans to utilize Afghanistan as a transit hub for gas exports to Southeast Asia.

While no international body officially recognizes the Taliban administration, referring to them as the “Taliban de facto authorities,” Russia’s official recognition could pave the way for other nations to reconsider their engagement with the regime.
