**Julio César Chávez Jr. Arrested by ICE, Faces Deportation on Organized Crime Charges**
Los Angeles, CA – Former Mexican boxing champion Julio César Chávez Jr. has been arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and is facing expedited deportation, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced on July 3rd.
The DHS stated that Chávez, 39, is wanted in Mexico on an active arrest warrant stemming from allegations of involvement in organized crime, as well as the trafficking of firearms, ammunition, and explosives.
The arrest comes just four days after Chávez Jr.’s high-profile boxing match against Jake Paul, which he lost by unanimous decision at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. The 10-round fight saw Chávez, son of boxing legend Julio César Chávez Sr., fall short against the celebrity boxer.
According to the DHS, Chávez initially entered the U.S. legally in August 2023 on a B2 tourist visa, valid until February 2024. However, in January 2024, he was arrested in Los Angeles on weapons charges. Reports from ESPN and the Los Angeles Times stated that police found two unserialized AR-style rifles, known as “ghost guns,” in his possession.
Chávez pleaded not guilty to the weapons charges and reportedly entered a residential treatment program. Court records indicate that he was granted a pre-trial diversion program. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the status of those charges.
The DHS statement also highlighted that the Biden administration allowed Chávez to re-enter the country in January and granted him parole at the San Ysidro, California port of entry.
This is a developing story.
