**CHENNAI, July 4, 2025** – The Coimbatore District Coir and Allied Products Manufacturers Association (COCOMANS), in collaboration with the Patent Information Centre under the Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology (TNSCST) and the Nehru Group of Institutions, is pushing for a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for Pollachi Coconut Coir.
Pollachi, a region known for its extensive processing of coconut husks and manufacturing of coir products, is seeking recognition for the unique quality and historical significance of its coir. The region, encompassing Pollachi South, Pollachi North, Anamalai, and Kinathukadavu, supplies coconut husks rich in fiber, essential for producing high-quality coir products used in both indoor and outdoor applications. Mature coconuts are specifically chosen for their husks’ superior fiber strength and durability, making them ideal for long-lasting and environmentally sustainable products.
The filing details the historical significance of the region’s coir industry, tracing back to the early 1800s when the British established the first mechanised coir-processing plants in Tamil Nadu. This facilitated the export of Tamil Nadu’s coir products, including ropes and mats, globally.
The establishment of the Coir Board of India in 1953 further solidified Tamil Nadu’s position as a key coir producer. By the mid-20th century, Pollachi had emerged as a major center for coir fiber, yarn, mats, and coir-based products.
With over 500 registered manufacturers in the Coimbatore district engaged in coir and related products, primarily operating as a cottage industry, the GI tag would protect the unique characteristics and origin of Pollachi Coconut Coir, ensuring its continued success in the market. The sought-after GI tag is expected to provide a boost to the local economy and further cement Pollachi’s reputation as a significant contributor to India’s coir industry.
