**Kubrick’s “Full Metal Jacket” Still Packs a Punch After 38 Years**
**London, UK –** War films can only brush the surface of real warfare but the most compelling ones evoke a sense of dread, sadness and horror to reflect the brutalities of war. Stanley Kubrick’s unflinching 1987 Vietnam War epic, “Full Metal Jacket,” continues to be hailed as a cinematic masterpiece, nearly four decades after its initial release. The film, currently streaming on Netflix and other platforms, is lauded for its brutal, uncompromising portrayal of the dehumanizing effects of war on young soldiers.
Split into two distinct acts, “Full Metal Jacket” first delves into the grueling training of recruits at a U.S. Marine Corps boot camp, with a particularly harrowing focus on Private Leonard “Pyle” Lawrence, played by Vincent d’Onofrio, and his torment at the hands of the infamous Gunnery Sergeant Hartman, portrayed by R. Lee Ermey. The second half plunges viewers into the chaotic battlefields of Vietnam, following Sergeant James “Joker” Davis (Matthew Modine) as he struggles to maintain his humanity amidst the violence and confusion.
Despite being set in Vietnam, a significant portion of the film was shot at Beckton Gas Works in London. Modine recalled that the film’s set was so toxic with asbestos and chemicals.
Critics continue to praise “Full Metal Jacket” for its lasting impact and relevance. Finlay Greig of The i Paper calls it “a more damning commentary on war than any film that came before, or has come since.” Chicago Reader’s Henry Sheehan highlights the film’s most horrifying moments, “in which the young Americans gladly assist in their own damnation.” Others note Kubrick’s mastery in both transfixing and enlightening his audience.
“Full Metal Jacket” not only cemented Kubrick’s reputation as a visionary director but also launched the careers of its stars. Matthew Modine, who described filming location as the most toxic place he’s ever been, has gone on to star in hits like “Stranger Things” and “Oppenheimer.” Vincent d’Onofrio has also had success in Daredevil and Law and Order, and R Lee Ermey has featured in Mississippi Burning.
“Full Metal Jacket” is available to stream on Netflix with a subscription, as well as for purchase or rental on platforms like Amazon Prime, Apple TV, and YouTube.
