Fri Jul 04 13:57:27 UTC 2025: ## Tirunelveli Farmers Get Crop Insurance Lifeline
**TIRUNELVELI, July 4, 2025** – The Union Government has approved crop insurance for paddy and banana farmers in Tirunelveli district, Karnataka, protecting them from potential losses due to natural disasters during the ‘kar’ season. This move comes after the State Government released water from the Papanasam dam in early June, leading to widespread cultivation of paddy and plantain.
The district administration, anticipating the risk of crop damage from floods or drought, submitted proposals to both the State and Union governments seeking insurance coverage.
Universal Sompo General Insurance Company Limited has been selected to insure paddy crops in 141 villages and banana plantations in 29 firkas. Farmers with a unique identity number are eligible to enroll in the scheme.
The deadline for paddy insurance premiums is July 31st, while banana farmers have until September 16th. Farmers can register through nationalized banks, common service centers, or directly via the website http://www.pmfby.gov.in. Required documents include the application form, 10.1 adangal, bank passbook (linked to Aadhar), Aadhar card copy, and copies of chitta and patta.
The premium for paddy insurance is ₹720 per acre, and for banana, it’s ₹1,801 per acre. In case of crop loss, compensation of ₹36,000 per acre for paddy and ₹89,600 per acre for banana will be disbursed directly to farmers’ bank accounts.
District Collector R. Sukumar urged farmers to take advantage of the scheme, stating that compensation will be based on yield loss assessment surveys. For further information, farmers can contact their local Assistant Director of Agriculture or call the toll-free number 14447.
