**Historic Adaikala Madha Shrine in Elakurichi Undergoing Preservation-Focused Renovation**
**Elakurichi, July 4, 2025** – The Adaikala Madha Shrine in Elakurichi, a testament to cultural syncretism, is currently undergoing a significant renovation project aimed at preserving its rich heritage. The shrine, founded in the early 18th century by Italian Jesuit priest Constantine Joseph Beschi, also known as Veeramamunivar, holds immense significance for both Roman Catholics and people of other faiths in the Ariyalur district.
The renovation, estimated to cost ₹3 crore, is being funded through devotee contributions and support from the State Minorities Commission. Parish Priest Rev. Fr. P. Thangasamy assured that the work will be carried out meticulously, ensuring the original heritage character, especially the main dome built by Veeramamunivar, remains untouched. The renovation is expected to be completed within the next six months.
The Adaikala Madha Shrine, dedicated to Our Lady of Refuge, is renowned for its statue of Mother Mary, which is distinctively adorned with Tamil jewelry, and believed to have been brought from Manila. Veeramamunivar, deeply immersed in Tamil culture, is celebrated for his exemplary Tamil literary works, including “Thembavani” and “Parmaratha Guru Kathaigal.”
The shrine gained prominence after Beschi reportedly cured the Ariyalur Palayakarar of a cancerous tumor, leading to the donation of a substantial amount of land to the church. The shrine continues to draw devotees seeking blessings and cures for ailments, with many believing in the healing power of the holy spring that appeared near the church.
The annual feast, celebrated after Easter, includes a grand car run. The shrine also integrates local customs, with Pongal celebrations and a special ‘Oli Vizha’ where 1,200 lamps are lit. Many families consider Adaikala Madha as their “kula deivam” (clan deity), further highlighting the shrine’s interfaith significance.
The State Tourism Department has planned to improve accessibility with better bus connectivity and amenities such as a parking lot and a children’s park.
This renovation project ensures the Adaikala Madha Shrine continues to be a beacon of faith, cultural harmony, and historical importance for generations to come.
