Wed Jul 02 19:05:50 UTC 2025: **Shastri Critical of Bumrah’s Rest in Crucial Edgbaston Test**

Edgbaston, UK – Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has expressed disbelief over the decision to rest Jasprit Bumrah for the second Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at Edgbaston. With India trailing 1-0 in the five-match series, the team management has opted to sit Bumrah out, citing workload management, and replacing him with Akash Deep.

Captain Shubman Gill stated the decision was made with an eye towards utilizing Bumrah in more favorable conditions at Lord’s. However, Shastri strongly disagreed, emphasizing the importance of the Edgbaston match.

“This is a very important match,” Shastri said during a Sky Sports broadcast. “I’m little surprised Bumrah is not playing this game. It should be the captain and the coaching staff that should decide who should be playing the 11. This is an important game in the context of the series, he should be playing this game more than anything else.”

Shastri argued that securing a 1-1 series draw at Edgbaston should take precedence over resting Bumrah for Lord’s. He highlighted India’s recent struggles in Test cricket and the need to regain winning momentum. “You have the best fast bowler in the side, in the world, and you make him sit out after seven days of rest, it’s something very hard to believe,” he added.

Former England fast bowler Stuart Broad echoed Shastri’s sentiments, noting that a week’s rest should be sufficient for a fast bowler. Broad was also surprised by Bumrah’s pre-series comment that he would only play three of the five Tests.

While the inclusion of Washington Sundar and Nitish Kumar Reddy strengthens the Indian batting lineup, the absence of Bumrah significantly alters the team’s dynamic at Edgbaston.
