Wed Jul 02 19:00:00 UTC 2025: ## Verstappen to Mercedes? Brown Adds Fuel to Fire Amid Contract Speculation

**Silverstone, UK – July 2, 2025** – McLaren CEO Zak Brown has stoked speculation surrounding Max Verstappen’s future, suggesting the Red Bull driver might be eyeing a move to Mercedes in 2026. Brown’s comments come after a Sky Italy report indicated Verstappen is “open” to joining the Silver Arrows, igniting rumors further fueled by delays in George Russell’s contract extension at Mercedes.

“When there’s smoke, there’s fire,” Brown told Sky Sports News at McLaren’s pre-British Grand Prix event. He implied that the ongoing conversations, acknowledged by Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff, are indicative of serious negotiations. “I said a while ago I wouldn’t be surprised to see Max in a Mercedes,” he added.

Verstappen, currently second in the championship standings behind McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, has dominated his Red Bull teammates this season. Brown believes the Dutchman is currently “carrying” the team, implying their performance would significantly decrease without him. He also hinted at further developments in the Verstappen-Mercedes saga.

Lando Norris, Verstappen’s on-track rival, stated he doesn’t care where Verstappen races but appreciates the battles they have together.

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner dismissed the speculation as “noise,” reiterating Verstappen’s contract with Red Bull until 2028. He suggested George Russell’s contract delay is a problem between him and his team.

The speculation comes after a turbulent period for Red Bull, including off-track controversies and a perceived dip in performance compared to McLaren.

Formula 1 fans can catch all the action from the British Grand Prix at Silverstone this weekend, live on Sky Sports F1 and Sky Showcase, with the race beginning at 3 PM on Sunday. Full schedule of broadcast times attached.
